ECOMANU VOLUNTEER - AMAZON EXPERIENCE PERU

1. PRESENTATION

Welcome to our volunteer program, is an organization legally constituted by EcoManu Lodge as (Non-Governmental Non-Profit Organization for development). In reforestation programs, valuation of medicinal plants, ecological agriculture, monitoring and listing of birds and mammals. The fundamental principle is rural development, understood as the welfare of the inhabitants of the countryside and from there the contribution to the local, regional and national community. This development is contemplated from an integral development perspective, which implies harmony between the population and its activities with the environment. These are also fundamental concepts of equity in our Eco tourism vision.

The reforestation and preservation program is developed in the Manu Biosphere Reserve in southeastern Peru. Because of its special location and its great biological biodiversity, it is highly recommended by students, couples, families, biologists, anthropologists, birdwatchers, ornithologists, photographers, etc.

2. OBJECTIVES

  • Increase economic income and improve the quality of life of the rural populationPreserve the soil, water and air, as the matrix for the development of life on the planet, generating forests that contribute to their conservation.
  • Make reforestation a priority and permanent activity in the national development agenda, especially in rural areas, due to its economic, social and environmental importance.
  • Recover degraded ecosystems and raise productivity levels, improving environmental quality.
  • Strengthen the political will of national and regional institutions in favor of reforestation as a national necessity.
  • Reduce pressure on natural forests, counteracting bad harvesting practices and the felling and burning of trees.
  • Raise social awareness to revalue nature, promoting citizen participation.
  • Carry out reforestation campaigns with local and regional educational centers to sensitize future citizens on the importance of reforestation and environmental conservation.

3. LOCATION

The Volunteer Program is based and headquartered at EcoManu Lodge, located in the MANU BIOSPHERE RESERVE, a place rich in biodiversity, on the right bank of the Alto Madre de Dios River, at UTM coordinates.

Very close to the tourist port of Atalaya at 460 m.a.s.l. and 230 km from the city of Cusco, by road Cusco – Paucartambo – Kosñipata Valley – Port of Atalaya – EcoManu Lodge – Madre de Dios, a 7 hour trip by local public transport.

ABOUT VOLUNTEERING

The volunteer can apply to the following work programs:

  1. Reforestation, collection of forest seeds, development of forest nurseries and maintenance of seedlings.
  2. Identification and valuation of medicinal plants with processing for the appropriate use of their medicinal properties.
  3. Ecological agriculture, planting of exotic plants, cocoa collection and chocolate processing.
  4. Monitoring and listing of birds and mammals. 
  5. Implementation and maintenance of a natural garden with exotic native flowers and orchids to attract and observe butterflies and hummingbirds.

The volunteer program experience will include two cooking classes per week.

The volunteer also collaborates in the following aspects for the smooth running of the project:

  • Cleaning and maintenance of trails/trails.
  • Enhancement of promotional and marketing tools for our websites.
  • Helping support staff with the transportation of food and project materials.
  • Once a week cleaning of the kitchen, dining room, dormitories and removal of inorganic garbage from the project.

PROGRAM COSTS

  • 1 Week minimum stay $ 280.
  • 2 Weeks $480.
  • 3 Weeks $ 580.

  • 5 Weeks $ 980.
  • 6 Weeks $ 1300.
  • 8 Weeks $ 1580.
  • 16 Weeks maximum stay $ 2820.

REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE:

Options open for those who wish to extend the volunteer program and don’t forget to inform us of your work interest and your dietary and health restrictions.

Work Days Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am. – 3:00 pm. On free days you have the option to visit and walk to the different natural attractions and native communities. Or play sports in the nearest town.

The volunteer program includes:

  • Reception and transfer from the airport in Cusco to the hostel assigned by the project.
  • Introduction and presentation of the project by the responsible coordinator. Free day in the city of Cusco.
  • The second day Transportation from Cusco city to the port of Atalaya and from there transfer in our boat to EcoManu Lodge. Reception and accommodation. The transportation ticket by bus is included by the project of Cusco EcoManu Lodge – Cusco.
  • Meals 3 full meals per day, mineral water and fruits and organic products of the crops with vegetarian option.
  • Full assistance and orientation by the project staff. 
  • Delivery of work implements, hats, gloves and long rubber boots.

The volunteer program not includes:

  • El seguro de viaje/médico y los gastos personales no están incluidos en este precio. Es obligatorio contratar un seguro médico y de viaje durante la duración del proyecto.

Terms of payment

If you are interested in becoming an environmental volunteer in the Manu Biosphere Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. Write to our contact numbers and to secure a placement in the project make a deposit of 15% of the total and the remaining percentage will be paid upon arrival in Cusco.

If for reasons of force majeure you need to cancel your participation in the project must be communicated 20 days in advance and 100% of the deposit will be refunded.

REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Minimum age 18. Years old and maximum 80 years old.
  2. Knowledge of English or basic Spanish.
  3. There is no restriction by nationality everyone is welcome for the great work of recovery of the Amazon.
  4. Have the spirit of sharing and living in harmony
  5. First of all do not bring plastic wrappers or single-use plastics, single-use disposable batteries, the project minimizes the use of single-use plastic.
  6. Personal equipment, for a humid tropical environment, hot cleaning utensils and personal cleaning products. Rain ponchos or raincoats, personal towel, bathing clothes, a pair of sandals, tennis shoes, hiking boots, flashlights with rechargeable batteries
  7. preferably, cameras and binoculars if your plan is to monitor birds and mammals.
  8. Insect repellent minimum 15% deet and sun lotions. Personal medication if special use is required. In the project we have a first aid kit.
  9. Cash in the city of Cusco there is a great diversity of banks and automatic teller machines and in the city they accept American dollars. In the towns near the project it is better to have money in Soles and cash, there are no banks or ATMs.
  10. Reading books, backpack and rucksack.
  11. Biodegradable detergent is not available in Peruvian supermarkets, if you can make the effort bring it. In the project we have detergent available to wash the clothes, it is a basic detergent.
